A Duty to Vote

It is election time. Unlike other election years, we vote for other worthy causes that are at stake; the future of our children, the future of our Community Center, and our future as Hararis in Ontario. In light of the aforementioned concerns, Voting is not only our right to exercise, but, it becomes our moral duty to fulfill.

Our community has transformed notably over the past decade. We grew older and wiser, our sons and daughters got married and some even blessed with their own children, our infants became school age children, teenagers enrolled in high schools and significant number have graduated from universities. As loving parents, the ultimate sacrifice we can make to our beloved children is when we put their interest ahead of ours. We all have common concerns and a sense of duty when it comes to the question of raising them. This is the most favorable time to pass on our true Harari values, our cultural heritage and religious identity to our children and the only way we can do this is when we fulfill our duty to vote.

The dream that began on December of 1997, at Tabscott Rd. Scarborough, to acquire a Community Centre became a sudden reality, a reality that can not be ignored by any stretch of imagination. Nevertheless, we all must able to converge to this reality and face the challenges. Each one of us has invested in one way or another towards the realization of our Community Center and each and every one of us has the duty and responsibility to maintain it. The minimum contribution we can make as members of our community is to cast our vote on the Election Day. Furthermore, we must also be prepared to serve our community either as officers or volunteers.

Let’s mobilize our community to make this election year unlike others. Traditionally, we used to vote with the purpose of only electing our Board Members. This time around, there are a number of compelling reasons to vote for. Let’s be proactive and not reactive. Let’s participate and pledge to contribute in every possible way we can to our community.
